Split is Croatia’s second-largest city and easily represents the beauty of the Dalmation Coast. With a vibrant lifestyle that blends modern life with ancient architecture, it is easy to experience the city simply by walking the streets.

You can fly into Split’s airport and meet a private transfer to take you directly to your accommodation in the city’s welcoming center. Inhabited for millennia as the home of Romans and Byzantines, Croats and Venetians, you can quickly find the layers of history and culture decorating the streets. Take the time to relax in your accommodations vetted to include the necessities of work and life during your time in Croatia.

Focus
Split is home to Intangible World Heritage like klapa, traditional singing. For an introduction to culture and the city, listen to a performance of the multipart singing custom and notice the characteristics of the vocals. Does it sound familiar as an acapella style or musical movement? How is it different?

Suggestion
Split is known for certain culinary specialties. Find a seaside restaurant serving a traditional dish like black risotto or a seafood stew.

Before starting your work week, step into the city’s history with a guide. Start with the unforgettable and unmissable Diocletian’s Palace, a Roman ruin at the center of the city that has withstood the tests of time. Rather than a pale imitation of its former glory, the building is still in use as a main boulevard filled with boutique shops, charming apartments, and cafes spilling the scent of fresh-baked pastries onto the streets.

Before you start work, you can visit the city’s highlights like the Cathedral of St. Dominus and its 12th-century bell tower that stands nearly 200 feet tall. Return to your accommodation with plenty of time and energy to settle into work for a productive day.

Focus
Before returning for work for the week, stop in The People’s Square to visit the statue of Gregory of Nin. The bishop wanted to introduce the national language into religious services in the 10th century. Take your time to make a wish and rub Gregory’s big toe to help you get focused on the work to come.

Suggestion
For a unique perspective of the city and its surroundings, climb to the top of the bell tower.

Enjoy a morning with work, spending your mental acuity tackling big projects or working deep on necessary tasks. When you are done, you can step back out onto the fascinating cobblestone streets of Split and continue to Klis Fortress. The town is easy to reach and sits beneath the limestone bluff of the dramatic defensive walls often used as a stand-in for the City of Meereen in the Game of Thrones series.

The fortress controlled the valley for centuries with a long and narrow design that continues to cling to the bluffs. Inside the fortress, you can visit a small museum dedicated to traditional costumes and swords of the region. Whether inside the gallery or on the towers to enjoy the view, you can easily step away from work to enjoy the pleasures of the day.

Focus
Create a Split Bingo Card. Think of the landmarks, images, or sounds that you have experienced since arriving in Split. It could include a view of the water, Diocletian’s Palace, the smell of a particular pastry. When you leave your accommodation, start filling out your card with what you notice to help you detach from work for the day and even enjoy the sunset.

Suggestion
Sample another tradition in Split with a rakija tasting, a  customary Croatian liquor often made from plums, grapes, or pears.

Set out to the Marjan Forest early in the day to explore a different side of Croatia. The park spreads across the peninsula above the city and has plenty of towering pine trees and walking trails to fill you with natural inspiration.

Take the stairway up to the park and climb the 314 steps to find the rewarding Telegrin viewpoint. The panorama captures the Kastela Gulf and the islands of Hvar and Vis in the distance. Return to your accommodation in the late morning after walking past medieval chapels, cave dwellings, and a centuries-old Jewish cemetery and start your work day at your leisure.

Focus
Sit in a cafe with your drink of choice. Set a timer for five minutes. Concentrate on slowly opening and closing your fists until the timer goes off.

Suggestion
If you have more time before starting work, relax at Kasjuni beach or start your work day at the atmospheric beach bar.

Start your morning with a traditional Croatian breakfast or enjoy the crisp morning air while sitting at a cafe before starting work. After you plug in, you can return to the beauty of Split and its surroundings with a visit to Brac Island. When the weather is warm, you can sit on the famous golden pebbles of Zlatni Rat beach, which is known for changing its shape each year.

Pine trees shade the edges of the coastline and visitors can enjoy lounging on the shore, paddle boating, or kayaking. Before returning to Split, you could spend time on the waterfront enjoying the slow burn of the sunset.

Focus
The ferry ride from Split to Brac takes approximately an hour. Spend that time unplugged from technology to decompress from work. Practice attentive listening by hearing the sounds of the water, the boat, birdlife, or the conversations of other passengers. Pass the time with intention.

Suggestion
Visit the daughter of Diocletian, whose mausoleum is located beneath the Radojkovic Tower.

Dive into work in the morning and feel productive before you set out for the town of Zadar in the early afternoon. Roman ruins fill the historic old town surrounded by medieval churches and cafes that exude cosmopolitan fun. The mixture of heritage architecture and elegant Habsburg design adds to the luxurious ambiance of the coastal setting.

The city pulses with life and erupts with sounds when the Sea Organ whistles and sighs as the water pushes air through the system of pipes. At sunset, the wistful exhales add a special soundtrack to the seaside. After sunset, the streets glow with the Sun Salutation light installation that produces an abstract representation of the solar system on the harbor front.

Focus
Listen to the sounds of the sea organ. How many different pitches can you hear? Organize a song to the notes, whether one you compose yourself or one you already know.

Suggestion
Zadar is the place to eat particular dishes like mussels from the local mussel farms or shrimp and lobster cooked in love oil with wine, garlic, tomato sauce, and breadcrumbs.

Take a day of PTO to visit the town of Sibenik, situated between Zadar and Split. The medieval center shines with white stone against the cobalt water of the sea. It can feel like a labyrinth of cobblestone alleyways and steep streets that meet the bordering hillsides. Walking through the streets and visiting the shops, cafes, and landmarks like St. James’s Cathedral can give you the biggest impact when visiting.

Climb to the top of St. Michael’s Fortress battlements for impressive views of the Krk River, Adriatic islands, and orange-tiled rooftops of the city below. Before returning to Split, you can stop in the beautiful town of Trogir to sit in a cafe on the waterfront promenade.

Focus
Stand on the battlements of St. Michael’s Fortress and take in the view. Give yourself two minutes to find and explore your “why,” your reaso for taking a Workation in Croatia.

Suggestion
In Trogir, you can visit an oyster farm to learn about the process and sample the freshest oysters you may ever have.

On your last day in Croatia, you could take your time relaxing in the accommodation before leaving for the airport or explore Split once more at your leisure. The morning farmer’s markets are often a great way to enjoy the local life and aromas of traditional local ingredients. The bustling fish market highlights the freshly caught seafood from the Adriatic with typical fish like dentex, European seabass, and sea bream. Head to the airport when you are ready and return home before the work week starts.

Focus
Concentrate on the colors of the farmer’s market. How many do you see? What food has the most variety of colors?

Suggestion
Buy some food at the farmers market to take with you to the airport and use for snacks during your flight home.
